Dear Sir,

Kindly clear my doubt; Question 3a is to find how many words can be made without any letter repeated. But the word JANUARY has only 6 different letters as "A" is repeating. Hence the formula must be used '6C4' rather than '7C4'. Please clarify to clear my doubt.

Very good observation made by one of the readers Kuttudinu.

I think the solution should be like this:
4 letter word from JANUARY (no repetition)
If A is part of the selection:
1 A can be selected out the 2 As in 2 ways.
Remaining 3 letters can be selected out of 5 in 5C3 = 10 ways.
Total number of words = 2*10 = 20
If A is not a part of the selection:
4 letters can be chosen out of 5 in 5C4 = 5 ways.
Total no. of words thus formed = 20 + 5 = 25

Dear Nav,

thank you for your posting. i am still confused and unable to get a proper answer now. pls help. As per my knowledge, i could reach only in the following conclusion. Being a knowledgeable person, please clarify.
The Question is "how many words can be made from the letters in the word JANUARY assuming that no letter is repeated, if 4 letters are used one time?"
But the question is not that, A is part of selection or not..........

The answer as per my knowledge is : Number of different letters are 6. Using the Formula :

ncr = n! ÷ (n-r)! r!

Therefore 6c4 = 6! ÷ (6-4)! 4!

= 6*5*4*3*2*1 ÷ [(2*1) * 4*3*2*1]

= 15

Please confirm, if this answer is right.........
